Travis Head shows out as Australia battle England

NOTTINGHAM: A back and forth battle took place on Thursday as the first ODI between England and Australia took place at Trent Bridge.

England set an imposing total at 315, behind opener Ben Duckett’s 95. Duckett was closing in on a century in the 33rd over before being caught out by Marnus Labuschagne after he bowled a googly and the English opener hit it right back to him. Will Jacks also performed well, scoring 65 before being caught out by Steven Smith off a delivery by Adam Zampa.

The rest of the English line-up managed to take their total to 315 before the last wicket fell in the final over.

Despite the large looming total, it didn’t take long for Australia to mount their assault. Opener Travis Head dominated throughout, scoring 154 off 129 deliveries, marking his 66th ODI century.

Head was able to withstand all adversity the Australian side faced, including a weaker than usual batting line-up as star players Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood were out with illness. Michell Marsh was also dismissed early in the 4th over, only scoring 10 runs.

Together with Steven Smith’s and Cameron Green’s 32 each, Australia calmly beat England by 7 wickets.
