Govt decides not to increase retirement age of chief justice

ISLAMABAD: (92 News) – The government has decided not to increase the retirement age of the chief justice in the constitutional amendment bill related to judicial reforms.

According to the details, the government has also decided not to give extension to any judge on the demand of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

Now the amendment is being brought only to establish a constitutional court, while the second amendment will be related to clarifying the procedure for the appointment of the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP).

According to the proposed amendment, the government will decide who among the five senior judges should be nominated as the CJP.

The third amendment will deal with the procedure of appointment of High Court judges.

It should be noted here that in the light of the proposed constitutional amendment, High Court judges will be able to be appointed anywhere in the country.

Therefore, the provision of consultation with the judges concerned for the appointment of High Court judges is being abolished.

It also merits a mention here that the meeting of the National Assembly to present the amendment bill has been rescheduled twice as the government is trying to convince MNAs to vote for the amendment.
