The United States and Iraq have reached an agreement on the plan for the withdrawal of coalition forces from Iraq, pending final approval and announcement date by both countries.

The plan includes the withdrawal of coalition forces by September 2025 and the departure of the rest by the end of next year, Reuters news agency reported, citing informed sources.

“We have reached an agreement and the only thing left is when it will be announced,” a senior US official said.

The two countries are also trying to establish a new consultative relationship that would allow some US forces to remain in Iraq after the withdrawal.

Sources said that the official announcement was initially supposed to be made a few weeks ago but was postponed due to regional tensions related to the war in the Gaza Strip and to settle some remaining details.

Sources said the deal could be announced this month, with Farhad Alauddin, adviser to the Iraqi prime minister on foreign relations, saying technical talks with Washington on the withdrawal had ended.
