The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Energy have given various suggestions for relief in electricity bills.
A lump sum of up to Rs 4 trillion has been proposed for Capacity Payment payments, while IPPs can be given lump sum relief in electricity bills.
Sources say that the proposal also states that the payments to the IPPs should be consolidated for the next three to five years.
On the instructions of the Prime Minister, the due date of electricity bills was extended by 10 days
Lump sum payments to IPPs will reduce the cost of electricity by more than Rs 5 per unit, the Energy Ministry has proposed to pool the total amount with the Finance Ministry.
According to the proposal, the Ministry of Finance should provide the money to the Ministry of Energy after arranging the financing, the Ministry of Energy should take the money from the Ministry of Finance and pay the IPPs in lump sum. According to sources, the finance ministry has made the relief in electricity bills conditional on the IMF.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been informed about these proposals, but the final decision has not been taken. The officials of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Energy have been working together since last week for relief in electricity bills.
